I must admit I wasn’t really aware that we had an “Earth Day” I got reminded about it by my daughter who had seen the commercial of Walt Disney’s latest movie “Cats in Africa” coming out on Earth Day and she wanted to go and see it! Well seems like Peoria is not on the planet Earth because no “Cats in Africa” is showing today!
Anyway it makes you think who actually decides these special themed days? I’m not saying it’s bad it gives us awarness I suppose better 1 day than none! I think we all deep inside want to take good care of the Planet we are living on, afterall we are it’s children without it where would we be? But there are days when we take it for granted, forgetting by polluting and not recycling we are at the end of the day hurting ourselves.
No we don’t want to see this. However, the market is coming out with better and more economical toilets that saves much more water which is good but what do we do with the old porcelain ones?
A tile company based in California Fire Clay Tile is working closely with local recyclers of toilets; the reclaimed porcelain is ground down and comprises more than 70% of a new tiles material!
Isn’t it great when you can get beauty out of waste!
We don’t want to see this either! But in Sweden 4 million tires are used/year and in European Union 250 million I don’t even want to know what that number would be world wide!
So a couple of Swedish Industrial Designers called Apokalyps Labotek gave it a thought
and came up with this really great looking parquet recycled from tires!
The material is made by cutting the tires into smaller pieces, separating the rubber from the textile and the steel. Then it is ground into a powder which is mixed with recycled plastic. The binding is reinforced with a patented molecule. More than 95 % of the content is made from recycled materials and can be recycled over and over.
I do not know how much paper I recycle per week but it’s a lot! Between packaging and all the crap you get in the mail everyday.
A designer student at Saint Martins College Oscar Lhermitte in London came up with this brilliant idea called “334”. The bench is made from 334 old newspaper folded and stacked next to one another on 3 parallel bars of metal. A very sculptural piece!
You know the pallets we sometimes get from some heavy delivery. I actually have one at my summer house laying around and every year I am thinking of turning it into a coffee table and put some wheels on it. Perhaps I will get it done this year!
A Dutch Architectural firm called Most took the idea a little bit further and designed a whole office with only pallets called the Brand Base pallet Project.
It’s like pieces of Lego you can modular the space as you want.
Yes everything is made with the pallets even the stare case.

Happy Earth Day guys let’s celebrate it Every day!

Shouldn’t it be Earth Day every day?!
